I decided to try the fun smashburger trench with a healthier Mediterranean twist! These flavors are some of my favorites! I used my Kefta recipe (check out my Kefta meatballs with whipped feta) and put them on a healthy pita instead of a bun! The result was great! I topped them with some homemade tzatziki , feta, red onion, tomatoes, cucumbers, and fresh dill! It is a perfect easy dinner.

Prep the meat ahead of time to allow the most time for the flavors to meld together. I’d also recommend using nothing lower fat than 90/10 for these, otherwise they will be dry. A lot of the viral smashburgers show smashing the tortillas on top of the raw burger and then cooking. I tried this and didn’t love the result, so I don’t recommend it. But you can do it that way if you like! I just found that the pitas got a bit greasy that way.
Here is what you will need:
- Ground Beef – I love Family Traditions Beef. I just reordered a bulk ground beef box! The taste is far superior to anything I’ve found in the grocery store, and they are an Indiana based farm!
- Fresh Mint
- Fresh Dill
- Spices – It’s a long list, but worth it!
- Red Onion – some sliced, some grated
- Tomatoes
- Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt
- Cucumbers
- Lemon
- Garlic
- Reduced Fat Feta Cheese

gIngredients
- Burgers
1 lb ground beef (90/10)
1/4 cup grated red onion
3 tbsp minced fresh mint
3 tbsp minced fresh parsley
1 tbsp coriander
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp pepper
- Pita & Toppings
4 Joseph’s flax, oat bran, whole wheat pitas
1 recipe homemade tzatziki
1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes
1 cup diced cucumbers
1/2 cup reduced fat feta cheese
1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion
2 tbsp fresh chopped dill
Directions
- Mix all burger ingredients well and place in fridge for 1 hr to overnight to meld the flavors.
- Preheat a large pan over medium heat. divide meat into 4 equal thin patties. Once hot place the patties in the pan. You can then press the pitas on top of the burgers if you like. I prefer to cook the patties separately. The pitas get a bit greasy if they are added at this point.
- One the patties are cooked to your desired doneness, place a pita on a plate, top with the burger.
- Add tzatziki and then remaining toppings.
